I've got a user here that is unable to connect to any of the Samba shares that are available -- in fact, she doesn't even get past the username / password validation step. The message that Samba puts into the logs is as follows : NT Password did not match ! Defaulting to Lanman To narrow down the problem, I logged onto her machine as myself (from the same domain also) and then got onto the Samba server without any problems. Her username is 8 characters, is there some limit on valid usernames? We are running with encrypted passwords, and both she and I have changed her password in the samba smbpasswd file without any luck. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! ======================================================Here is a portion of my smb.conf file : [global] debuglevel = 3 workgroup = dh comment = Justice Samba Server admin users = root load printers = no printing = sysv log file = /usr/local/samba/var/log.%m username map = /usr/local/samba/lib/users.map max log size = 50 hide dot files = yes browseable = yes preserve case = yes short preserve case = yes guest account = guest encrypt passwords = yes status = yes lock directory = /usr/local/samba/var/locks locking = yes domain master = no local master = yes preferred master = yes os level = 65 share modes = yes wins support = no wins server = 129.193.108.22 socket options = IPTOS_LOWDELAY TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=16384 SO_RCVBUF=16384 security = user ====================================================== Here is an excerpt from the log : 02/25/98 09:21:35 Transaction 1 of length 174 switch message SMBnegprot (pid 720) Requested protocol [PC NETWORK PROGRAM 1.0] Requested protocol [XENIX CORE] Requested protocol [MICROSOFT NETWORKS 1.03] Requested protocol [LANMAN1.0] Requested protocol [Windows for Workgroups 3.1a] Requested protocol [LM1.2X002] Requested protocol [LANMAN2.1] Requested protocol [NT LM 0.12] Selected protocol NT LM 0.12 02/25/98 09:21:35 Transaction 2 of length 134 switch message SMBsesssetupX (pid 720) Domain=[] NativeOS=[Windows NT 1381] NativeLanMan=[] sesssetupX:name=[] guest is in 1 groups 65534 uid 1038 registered to name guest Clearing default real name Chained message switch message SMBtconX (pid 720) ACCEPTED: guest account and guest ok found free connection number 12 Connect path is /tmp chdir to /tmp chdir to /usr/local/samba/lib 02/25/98 09:21:35 p02633986b (129.4.144.38) connect to service IPC$ as user guest (uid=1038,gid=65534) (pid 720) 02/25/98 09:21:35 tconX service=ipc$ user=guest cnum=12 02/25/98 09:21:35 Transaction 3 of length 158 switch message SMBsesssetupX (pid 720) Domain=[DH] NativeOS=[Windows NT 1381] NativeLanMan=[] sesssetupX:name=[Qualizza] Error smb_password_check failed NT Password did not match ! Is your NT client having SP/3 service pack installed? If that is the case, then you need to compile and install samba with password encryption enabled. Also, get the latest version of samba, which does not need any other library for encryption, and has its own encryption code. I am running version 1.9.18p2 without any problem, though I had problem with earlier version of samba. Get this version, then read doc/Encryption.txt properly, then follow the procedure and install it, and then try from NT client. I think it will work, because it does work at my place. Let me know if it does not, also with the log files. -Sain -- |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| Biswajit Sain sain@wipinfo.soft.net Wipro Infotech, 3/1, 3rd Cross, 30, Mission Road New Thippasandra Main Road, Bangalore 560 027 Bangalore 560 075 +91-80-2241730 ext 3507/3523/3506 |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|
